Emergency Lighting and Exit Lighting

Emergency and Exit Lighting is a requirement in most buildings in Ontario. Emergency lighting is a battery-backed lighting device that switches on automatically when a building experiences a power outage. Emergency and Exit lights are standard in commercial and residential buildings, such as apartments, offices, retail and assembly occupancies. It is commonly located in common hallways and stairwells to enable the swift and safe evacuation of a building by illuminating its escape routes.

Ontario Fire Code requires that emergency lighting be inspected and tested monthly to ensure that the emergency lights will function upon failure of the building power supply and annually to ensure that the unit will function for the required time frame, as dictated by building occupancy and code requirements.
